Frontier Casino Las Vegas Sign

Blaze a trail on the frontier of 3D printing with the… you guessed it… The Frontier! If you’re hankerin’ for the 60’s – 70’s Las Vegas Strip and the Old West look, this is your sign, partner! Some local Vegas townfolk hollered for this one, so we rounded up the modeling software, printing filament, LEDs, wiring and went to town!

Our version of The Frontier is a little over 20-1/2 inches tall, is identical front and back, and is modeled in brown, tan, white, black and gold silk thermoplastic polymer. The “F” logo and the gold stars turn (by hand) like the real sign. The illuminated version is lit internally with 60 white LEDs to make the word “FRONTIER” and the marquee glow. The “original” version is a replica of how the sign appeared in the 70’s (see photo), but the marquee can be personalized to your liking.

Frontier Casino Sign History

The Frontier opened in 1942 and was said to be a favorite of a fellow named Howard Hughes who later purchased the resort for $14 Million in 1967. The original sign was 186-feet tall and was designed by Bill Clark of Ad-Art. It contained miles of neon tubing and 23,000 incandescent light bulbs. The “F” logo on the top was 30 feet tall. The sign changed colors a number of times over the years and ended up as predominantly green. The Frontier featured many of the big names in entertainment throughout its’ five decades of operation. The casino closed for good in 2007 and the sign was taken down a year later.

Our developer is a classic sign enthusiast and was a designer in the full-size commercial sign industry. This sign took 35 hours to 3D model and each one takes 80 hours to print and another 12 hours of hand-wiring and assembly.
